Aleksei Sorokin Awarded Prestigious DOE Research Fellowship

We are thrilled to share that QMCPy’s lead developer, Aleksei Sorokin, has been awarded the highly esteemed Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science Graduate Student Research (SCGSR) Fellowship. This fellowship is a testament to Aleksei’s exceptional talent and dedication to advancing scientific research and software development. As one of only 62 recipients from across the United States, Aleksei stands out as the sole winner in Applied Mathematics this year.

The SCGSR program awardees will work at national laboratories across the country, addressing complex scientific challenges. Through world-class training and access to state-of-the-art research facilities, this program prepares doctoral candidates like Aleksei to enter roles critical to the DOE’s mission, ensuring that the nation remains at the forefront of discovery and innovation.

The selection process for this fellowship is highly competitive, with applicants reviewed by external scientific experts based on merit. Every year, only a small number of students are chosen from a nationwide pool of top-tier graduate applicants. Aleksei’s selection places him among an elite group of researchers with exceptional academic and research abilities.

Aleksei’s PhD advisor, Prof. Fred Hickernell, is pivotal in his academic journey. Prof. Hickernell, Professor of Applied Mathematics and Vice Provost for Research at the Illinois Institute of Technology, is renowned for his research in Monte Carlo and quasi-Monte Carlo (MCQMC) methods and his dedication to fostering innovative research among students. Under his guidance, Aleksei has not only honed his skills in scientific software development but also deepened his understanding of complex theoretical concepts. Together, they have co-led the development of QMCPy, an open-source software framework that significantly advances the field of MCQMC methods by providing efficient tools for researchers worldwide. The SCGSR Fellowship is not only a recognition of Aleksei’s accomplishments, but also a testament to the collaborative environment fostered by Prof. Hickernell’s leadership at Illinois Tech and also in the QMCPy group.

Aleksei’s selection for the SCGSR Fellowship is a significant achievement that brings pride to the QMCPy and Illinois Institute of Technology communities.
